Whanau Groups

Next Tuesday we will be taking part in the school cross-country. It will be the first time we work with our 'Whanau Groups'. There are Four Whanau - Mahoe, Rata, Kowhai and Kauri. To support our Whanau group, we can come dressed in the corresponding colour. Check out our classmates' groups below.

So much to catch you up on!

So it's been a wee minute since our last post, and as the title suggests - we have been very busy in class. Of course we have been working hard on our reading, writing and math, but we have also been lucky enough to have some fun activities outside of the classroom to support other areas of learning.

We met Jenny from the Mobile Library Bus. Jenny comes and visits us outside school a few times a term. Turns out some us already knew Jenny from Kindergarten, so it was a nice surprise to catch up with her.

Thank you to all the whanau who completed 'Library Card Forms' for us to return. We will be visiting the Bus on the last day of term and Jenny will have our new cards ready. If you would still like to sign up, we have more forms in class.

We can't wait to take home something interesting to read!

We finished up our swimming lessons for Term 1. Swimming everyday showed us we were able to make big changes to how we swim. We set small goals like we do in literacy and numeracy and were focused learners.

Some children began the term being nervous of the water, by the end of term they were lifting their legs and swimming with a noodle for support.

Other children were able to kick with a flutter board and by the end of term were kicking and practising 'rainbow arms'. We all made lots of progress.

Thank you again to Belinda, Deb and Liz. They were a big help in making sure our swimming lessons ran smoothly.

We have been also been practising our tennis moves with the Hot Shots Team. You can see Xavier above practising his backhand. We also learnt to use a forehand strike and to serve. We will continue to work on our small ball skills this term.

We visited the Life Education Van and meet the fabulous duo, Andrea and Harold the Giraffe. We learnt all about 'bucket filling' and being supportive of others. We even had a little bit of a dance party to celebrate!

Ask a Room 17 student if you would like to know more information.

Our classmates rock!

Shout out to our boys Xavier, Gurkeerit and Malakai. All three boys were nervous about putting their heads under the water at the start of our swimming unit. But look at them now! Heads under the water and lifting their legs to kick with the noodles.

Ka mau te wehi!

Room 17 Hearts Rm 2

Last Friday we got together with our buddy class, Room 2, for the second time. This time we paired up, so every child has a special buddy from the other class. Turns out we already knew some of the older children! We learnt each other's names and discussed what we had in common. We then shared what we had learnt about each other with the whole group.

Swimming at School

We have been making lots of use of our school pool over the last two weeks and we have made some impressive improvement. We will continue swimming in week four - can't wait to see what our progress will be then!

I te timatanga ...

It has been an exciting week getting to meet our new classmates and their whanau. This has provided lots of learning opportunities to practise working with different types of people, in different spaces.
  • We have worked with each other - in pairs, small groups and as a whole class.
  • We have worked with Koka Tangi, learning about Manaakitanga and Aroha.
  • We have worked with Mrs Turner and Mrs Hurren during discovering time, where we also worked with children from Room's 16 and 18.
  • We share assembly with the Koru Team.
  • We worked with Ms Holcroft in the Trentham School Library.

We have been really busy! Lucky we already know a lot about being kind and teamwork!

If you are able, come and check out our wall display on kindness. We will also have some artwork to share soon too. In the meantime here are some photos from our first week.
